Read
and Lead is Discovery's home reading program sponsored by
the PTA. Teachers will discuss the program with you during October conferences and then encourage you and your child to join. The reading incentive program begins
the third week of October. If you have not yet enrolled your child and
would like to, contact your child's teacher or the program coordinators.
It is never too late to get started.
During
the program, you will read aloud to your child every day at home. This kind of reading practice is the single best way to improve
reading ability. Since most kindergarteners are pre-readers, parents are encouraged to read the book to your child, and then ask you child to point out a certain letter, or a sight word, or a letter that makes a certain sound, or ask your child what happened in the story. As your child's skills grow over the year, you can ask him to blend words or read sight words, or you may to have him read the story back to you.
For
each 100 minutes read, your child will receive a prize. Each child will
have a "school bus" on the wall outside his/her classroom that
will show time read throughout the year. In addition, students who read
400 minutes or more in each of the three sessions will be invited to a
reward party. Students who meet the goal of 400 minutes in each session,
will be invited to an awards party at the end of the year.
The
most important part of Read and Lead is adult involvement. Parents are asked
to read to their child 10 minutes a day, 5 or more days a week.
We
will select a book at your child's reading level and send it home in a
special book bag. This is the book you should use with your child. To reach
10 minutes of reading, you should read his/her book at
least twice, pointing out particular letters, sounds and sight words. Your child may
return his/her book every day to have it exchanged for another one.
