The turbulent times of the sixties could be felt at Fife High
School. Protests were not commonplace, but a few happened. Interestingly
enough national issues were not the primary concern, however,
local injustices were recognized. When a student was accused of
cheating and suspended from athletic participation, the students
staged a protest and signed a petition asking for a fair hearing
by the administration.
Funds for a new cafeteria were acquired and the old lunchroom
was partitioned to form two classrooms. The cafeteria come in
under budget at $201,082.00. A music room was also built and for
the first time in a long time the music department had a space
of their own. Tennis courts were built in 1962. The barn was built
in 1963. The Active Club (the predecessor to the Booster Club)
built a concession booth and restrooms for the athletic field.
The materials were furnished by the district and labor supplied
by the club members. In 1963 Fife was the only school in the county
that did not dismiss school for the Western Washington Fair. Robert
c. Hall retired after serving 29 years as superintendent of the
Fife School District.
In 1967 the Trojans took the State Championship in the South Puget Sound League.
Spirit, Speed And Sweat Put Them On Top
It was foggy; it was cold. Tromp, tromp – the sound of shivering fans stumbling into slivery bleachers. Traveling miles to see gleaming gold helmets push down the field; to see them held back. Kids leaving school on rooters’ buses at 6:00, meeting at the D.Q. at 11:30. Blaring radios, screaming sophomores, tired seniors—everyone forced by some unknown power to fight the cold and huddle together, teeth chattering to “Our Team Team is Red Hot! Whoo—Whoo!” Suddenly it got warmer. Winning brings a spirit which warms anybody’s heart. Kids look forward to crowded bus rides—sophomores scream more, but something’s been added—the seniors’ are screaming too! Scream in anticipation of the game, scream for winning! Travel to Tahoma, to White River, and win! Stay at home and beat Tumwater, Foster, and Laughbon! Glory! We’re in the Championship Game! Travel to Sumner with two busloads and a parking lot full of people, people, people! Every play counts…catch that pass! Touchdown! We’re ahead! We’re beating the third-ranked North Thurston Rams! Another touchdown, but one for their side too. Don’t panic! What a defensive game! Our jerseys have never been so muddy! Won’t that final buzzer ever sound! Four minutes, two minutes…There it is! Fife High School tears onto a grassless field! We won! We’re CHAMPS!!!(Continue)
