My Head is Full of Colors, Discovery

Key Concepts for Learning:

  • To understand how to create visual images from what is read aloud.
  • To listen to and respond to My Head Is Full of Colors, by making a connection to what students' heads are thinking about.

Lesson Design:

Students listened to the above story that described a girl who woke up every morning with her head actually full of a variety of people, animals, and or things. They then were asked to think what could be in their heads in order to make connections to the story and to understand that our thoughts can be pictured. The students then drew their faces and pictures of what was in their heads.

Student Quotes:

  • "I learned about what other kids were thinking."
  • "It was fun to draw pictures of my thinking."
  • "I liked it when the girl thought her head was full of animals."
  • "It made me think of soccer because I like soccer."'
