Key Concepts for Learning:

Design and conduct an investigation in the WASL investigation format.

  • Choose a question to investigate.
  • Generate a hypothesis about the question.
  • Identify manipulated, responding, and controlled variables.
  • Develop a procedure to test if the manipulated variable does have an effect on the responding variable.
  • Collect, record, and report data.
  • Write a conclusion to the investigation

Lesson Design:

Students were asked to apply what they had been learning about scientific investigations by conducting an investigation on a topic of their choice.  The 7th graders could work individually or in small groups to research a topic and conduct a controlled investigation.  They would share their results through trifold displays at an evening open house.  Most of the work was done outside of class.  Projects were shared with individual classrooms before being put on display for the open house.

Those who attended the open house were given a ballot to vote for their favorite in a variety of categories.  Top vote getters received a science fair medal.

Student Quotes:

“It was hard to measure the responding variable”

“It didn’t turn out like I thought it would.”

“We went all the way to the University of Washington to meet with a professor”
