Requirements for Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention Education
In the Common School Manual, as provided in RCW 28A.230.020 Common school curriculum—fundamentals in conduct. All schools shall provide . . . "the minimum requisites for good health including the beneficial effect of physical exercise and methods to prevent exposure to and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases . . . "
The specific grade level/s or the frequency of such instruction is not specified. Resources for STD prevention are provided in the state model KNOW HIV/STD Prevention Curriculum. However, school districts have the option to use this or another locally adopted program for instruction.
Aids education at Surprise Lake Middle School is age appropriate. Our Physical Education staff takes one teaching day per year and covers HIV prevention. They use approved state curriculum which includes the handouts linked below as well as a 20 minute video. Students are then grouped together to discuss the questions listed.
