WELCOME TO SCIENCE

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

I’m Kelly Clark and I will be your science teacher this year.  This is my seventh year at Surprise Lake.

You are part of a great team at our school. We will work with you to help you have successful start

in middle school.  My goal, as your teacher, is to support and assist you as you gain confidence in

problem solving, critical thinking, scientific thinking, and organization.

Sixth grade is a new start.  You are at a new school, with new classes, new teachers, new friends,

new expectations, and new responsibilities.  Choices you make in sixth grade may determine the

path you choose to take for the rest of your life. This is an extremely important year.

Our units of study this year are: Diversity of Life – microscopic life and cells

Mixtures and Solutions – atoms and general chemistry

Human Body Systems – nervous, skeletal, etc.

                                               Scientific Process – labs

Grades are based on a percentage of earned points out of total possible points.  Points are earned by

students on completed assignments and assessments.  The grading scale as follows:

A           93% to 100%               B-          80% to 82%                 D           60% to 67%

A-          90% to 92%                 C+         78% to79%                  D+         68% to69%

B+         88% to 89%                 C            73% to77%                 F            below 60%

B            83% to87%                 C-          70% to72%

Students are to have the following supplies by Friday and to bring all materials to class every day:

  • A PENCIL and highlighters
  • composition book
  • student agenda and binder
  • safety glasses (to be kept in the classroom)

To be successful and have an enjoyable year in science students are expected to:

Be Respectful

Be Prepared

Be Here

Be and do their best

Parents will be contacted by me if a student is repeatedly having difficulties meeting these expectations.

All SLMS students are required to use the provided agenda to record assignments and other important

information.  Every day, in science, students will copy my agenda exactly as I have written it so there is

no misunderstanding about what is expected (in other words, student shorthand is not acceptable.)  Please

sign planners once a week, at the bottom of the Thursday column.  This is also a good place to write me

a note.  Parents can also contact me at kclark@fife.k12.wa.us  or 517-1300.

I am looking forward to getting to know you and an excellent school year.

Ms. Clark
