Next time you have a word problem (such as in your homework or on the WASL) use the following steps.

 

Read

Read the problem.  Read it again. Read it until you understand it. Then read it again.

Circle

Circle, underline, or highlight any information that will help you solve the problem.

Ask

Ask: What are they looking for?  Do I need to show my work?  How do they want the answer written? How many answers do I need to give?

Choose

Choose a strategy or approach. What do you need to do to solve the problem?

Solve

Solve the problem.  Do the work to find the desired solution.

Answer

Answer you work where and how you are asked to.  Identify your specific answers.

Check

Check you answer.  Does it make sense? Read the problem again and cross off the information you used and questions you answered. Did you use if all?
